Orthopedics Department

Welcome to the department of Orthopedics, GMCTH, Pokhara.

Staff members: 

First of all, a brief introduction of our department!  We have 60 beds allotted for our department out of 547 beds in our hospital. We have six regular full time working faculties in our department under the leadership of Prof. Dr. R B Tripathi.  Prof Dr.R P Shrestha, Assoc. Profs. Dr B.Shrestha, & Dr I Kandel along with Assist. Profs Dr R. M. Dhakal & Dr K B Bista comprise the whole team. We have three medical officers actively helping in our daily departmental activities. 

OPD & IPD Services:

On the average, we have regular Opd turn out of around 90 to 100 patients per day. Out of which 60% cases are new entries and 40% are the follow up cases. Bed occupancy in our department is around 70-80% per day. We have about 20-30 orthopedic patients attending our Accident & Casualty department every day. Most of them are the trauma victims.

Operations:

We have a separate Operation theatre room allotted for our department which runs every day. We have specialized trained man powers in the field of Sports injury & Spinal injuries in our faculty team.  Total number of operations performed in our dept is around 30 per week including both major & minor cases. Among major operations we do regular hip surgeries including Hemi arthroplasty & DHS, locking plates & intra medullary interlocking nailing of various long bones along with other regular trauma surgeries. We do regular Spinal trauma surgeries including pedicular screw fixation. We do some reconstruction surgeries like CTEV and other congenital deformities of limbs. We do the bone tumor surgeries as well; as we have the luxury of the services of an Oncologist in our hospital. We have a separate image intensifier C-arm x-ray facility in our OT room which makes our job easier and confident even in difficult surgeries. Very shortly, we are going to start Arthroscopic surgeries for Sports injuries. Besides these, we have facilities of instant OT services for all emergency cases and routine closed reductions and pin fixation/plaster etc. for all common fractures attending A & E dept or Orthopedic OPD clinic.

Very soon we are going to start separate Opd clinics for spinal & sports injury cases.

Research Activities:

we do regular clinical research activities in our department and publish our results in the college Journal “J-GMC-Nepal”. We have regular teaching and academic activities in our department. We have weekly CME activities on every Wednesday in our department with special view to train & update our medical officers and interns.
